SOMME BATTLEFIELDS,   "Battlefields of the Western Front"

Available all year except Anzac Day.

3 nights in Arras.

Discover some of the most important sites on the Somme. Including a tour to Ypres and the Menin Gate Ceremony. Based in the beautiful town of Arras we have constructed a package to allow you to see as much as possible in 3 days of the main areas relevant specifically to Australian visitors..

The tours are conducted by an experienced professional Australian guide who understands and delivers what Australian visitors wish to see.   Available from April to November, except ANZAC Weekend

Day 1:     Depart Paris Gare du Nord at leisure and arrive in Arras.  There are no tours planned for today.  However you might want to visit some of the museums in the beautiful town of Arras.  Along with the Museum of Fine Arts and the beautifully restored Flemish Baroque architecture of the city you will find the recently opened Wellington Quarry.  It is an underground museum which has been carefully recreated to show how life was lived in the tunnels and quarries below the city during WW1.  Overnight Arras.

Day 2:    Today's  tour will be to some  of some of the most important sites of the Somme: Bullecourt Digger, battlefield landscape lecture, Bullecourt Museum, Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, Australian Corps Memorial, Le Hamel, Lochnager Crater, Pozieres 1st Australian Division Memorial, Gibraltar Bunker, Windmill site, Thiepval Memorial to the missing and Newfoundland Memorial Park where you will see the remains of the trenches and battlefield.  Return to Arras. Evening free

Day 3:     Your tour today will be to Fromelles and Ypres. We leave the beauty of Arras and travel directly to the tragedy of Fromelles, the scene of such a huge Australian tragedy that history tried to forget that it ever happened.  Today you will also visit Vimy Ridge Canadian Memorial Park, Pheasant Wood Cemetery with the Cobber Memorial, Fromelles Museum, Hill 60, Polygone Wood Australian 5th Division Memorial, Tyne Cot Cemetery (Passendaele) and visitor centre, Essex Farm cemetery and finally Ypres, where you will experience by the awesome Menin Gate the solemn “Last Post” ceremony conducted there each day at 8pm.  Return to Arras around 10pm.

Day 4:     Depart after breakfast. Note there are regular direct train services to Paris, the trip takes approximately 50 minutes.
