SOMME BATTLEFIELDS

These guided tours are the best available, organised and guided by Australians for Australians, in private vehicles or mini-bus, with the best local accommodation available. They can be personalised to visit specific cemeteries, historic and commemorative sites. If you wish, you can visit a specific grave or where a particular regiment fought.

In 1916 after the nightmare of Gallipoli, the Australian troops arrived on the Western Front to take part in the Battle of the Somme. The small village of Pozieres was to become famous due to the high sacrifices of the three divisions that fought there. These divisions were to fight again, the following year at Bullecourt and then in Flanders during the 3rd Battle of Ypres. During the 2 years to 1918 their brave efforts helped stop the last German offensive at Villers- Bretonneaux. Their efforts were instrumental in liberating large numbers of towns and villages from the Somme to the Hindenburg line.

The residents of the Somme today, some ninety years later, still feel a strong alliance with the Australians. Our local tour guides specialise in the Australian Battlefields. They will let you discover the Australian Memorial at Villers Bretonneux and Victoria School, as well as many of the military cemeteries that punctuate the local countryside. Peronne and Mont Saint Quentin will be explored as will Pozieres and the site of the windmill, Gibraltar, Mouquet Farm and the preserved trenches and mine craters.
